When did the ceremonies stop being celebrated? When the re-enactments of these ceremonies began to be planned we did not know that the Old Catholic Church still celebrates the blessing ceremonies today, and that adelphopoiesis is still a valid rite. This is not the only branch of the Church to do so. When we consulted Bishop Tancibok, who is a slav and reads Greek, he was in process of re-translating the texts for his own church, in a more accurate and contemporary edition. The last historical text of the right comes from the 16th century, but there are references to the rite being celebrated in each of the centuries since, and many oral accouints of ceremonies from the twentieth century that have not yet found their way into writing - so they are not strictly speaking 'history' yet. It is interesting that many churches that were unaware of their historical heritage have found a need to invent their own modern blessing ceremonies, as if the original had not existed. |
